Jazz music is a vibrant, improvisational art form that celebrates creativity and collaboration. Rooted in African American history, it has absorbed influences from various cultures, creating a rich tapestry of sounds. This genre fosters a unique sense of community, bringing together diverse musicians from different backgrounds to share their stories and express their individuality. Through collaboration and spontaneous creation, jazz breaks down barriers, encouraging dialogue and connection among artists and audiences alike.
Jazz is the magic that happens when musicians collaborate. Spontaneous & diverse. Picture the musicians in a jazz band and you could get a combination of a big black dude in a natty suit, a skinny white guy in scruffy jeans and an old black t-shirt, a beautiful woman in a sparkly dress, a goth dude on the drums…
Jules taught himself the guitar on a beach in India and became a master drummer in the mountains of the Free State. His first band was called The Jazzfarmers, and gigs around Gauteng paid the bills for a while. The name stuck, and the rest is history.
Ami and I always tell people, “We don’t farm jazz, we are jazzy farmers!” We listen to every conceivable genre of music, but the essence of what jazz is about has crept into every corner of the farm. Everyone is welcome on our colourful “stage”, we wear many hats and we dance to our own tune.
The Jazzfarm family stretches around the globe, and countless friends, colleagues and adventures have made our place what it is today. Johannesburg, the city that has been our home since forever and the greatest city on earth, has made The Jazzfarm what it is!
