At The Jazzfarm, the garden is alive not only with plants and art but also with the flutter and song of countless birds. Julian, an avid birder, and Myrtle spent years travelling South Africa in search of rare sightings, a passion now rooted here at home. According to BirdLife South Africa, as many as 340 species could be spotted in our area. With our well-worn copy of Sasol Birds of South Africa always at hand, we delight in marking each visitor to our garden — turning birdwatching into both a pastime and a way of deepening connection to place.
For us, birdwatching at The Jazzfarm is less about ticking names off a list and more about slowing down, listening, and sharing space with the wild. Whether it’s the flash of a sunbird among the aloes or the call of a nightjar at dusk, each sighting feels like a gift. Guests and friends are invited to join us in this quiet joy — to pick up the binoculars, leaf through the bird book, and add their own discoveries to the story of the garden. In the company of birds, there is always something new to notice.
